For the filling

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon

For the frosting

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups confectioners’ sugar


1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

2. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs, one at a time, then stir in vanilla extract. In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add to butter mixture alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour mixture.

3. To make the filling, in a small bowl, cream together butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon until light and fluffy.

4. Spread half of the batter evenly into the prepared pans. Top with the cinnamon filling, then spread the remaining batter over the top.
